Day Of Silence by Ashley.

So today there was Day Of Silence at FHN. Personally i found it to be a success. Many people supported, others did not. But hey it's all up to them. Some kids took it as far as not speaking the whole day, and others just supported with a ribbon or a t-shirt. And of course there were the few rebels. I think its great that we had this day at our school. We have days to support other groups. We even have whole months to support races. Its good for kids to be able to show their views in a public way. We shouldn't have to silence the way we feel at the place we spend the most of our time. One day might not seem like a lot now, but it means so much more than that to the gay community. I think the non speaking thing that kids did had an awesome message behind it. I hope this day showed everyone they don't have to hide who they so they don't get judged. High school is about discovering yourself and this shows everyone they don't have to hide anything about themselves once they find it. Respectfully tell me how you think Day Of Silence went. Do you think there should be more than one day?

I thought it was pretty cool of a lot of students to stand up for what they believed in. However, I just want to say that it really made me mad when people would say bad things about the supporters to their faces, because they obviously couldn't speak up for themselves. It isn't fair to be treated unkindly for supporting something you believe in. I admire everyone who went the whole day without talking, and really showed their support : )

I participated in the Day Of Silence and got in several 'discussions' (obviously, I wasn't speaking, nor was most of the group) about the purpose and worth of a day of silence. I think it's wrong to consider the day worthless: it is mostly symbolic, and a fairly reactive, passive response, but it got people talking about gay rights and hate crimes, which should have been the point. By accomplishing that, the day should be considered a success. I think the Adam & Eve, Not Adam & Steve was fairly ridiculous: A) Who has not heard that before?, and The Day Of Silence is not about gay marriage. Day of Silence is about hate crimes and oppression, and I don't know how anyone could stand against that.
